Crime Stoppers of Lufkin, Inc. is a private, 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization and has been in existence since June of 1983. Crime Stoppers is controlled by a Board of Directors consisting of 17 civilian members of the community. Rocky Thigpen is the President of Crime Stoppers, Connie Kennedy is Vice-President, Joe Rich, Jr. is serving as Treasurer and Tommie Miller is the Secretary. Coordinator for Crime Stoppers is Lt. David Young of the Lufkin Police Department. The Board meets on the last Wednesday of each month to conduct business and approve rewards. Crime Stoppers pays a cash reward for information that leads to the arrest and Grand Jury indictment of the person or persons responsible for a crime. Lt. Denman presents information about tips that have been received during the month to the Board and cash awards are assigned to all cases that resulted in an arrest or indictment. Sometimes rewards are paid for the recovery of stolen property or drugs. Crime Stoppers tipsters do not have to give their name and all calls are confidential. The statistics illustrates the positive effect that Crime Stoppers has had on the reduction of crime in our area.

Crime Stoppers airs a television re-enactment of a recent crime every other week on KTRE-TV Channel 9. Other weeks feature our neighboring program, Nacogdoches Crime Stoppers. The broadcasts are made during the evening and nightly news at 6 and 10 PM on Mondays. They then run at random as a Public Service Announcement during the week. Crime Stoppers Most Wanted posters are shown on KLSB-TV Channel 56. A Crime Stoppers "Crime of the Week" can be heard on radio stations KYKS 105.1, KFOX 95.5, Q107 107.7, and KSFA 860AM.
Crime Stoppers of Lufkin can be reached at 936-639-TIPS (8477) or through Texas Crime Stoppers at 1-800-252-TIPS. Callers give their information and then are given an identification number or "tip" number. They can then call back, using that "tip" number, with additional information or call back within 7-10 days to check on the status of the case. There are no electronic monitoring devices or Caller ID on the phone. An answering machine will take the message if no one is in the office or the phone line can be switched over to Communications where dispatchers take the information.
If the information was useful, the caller will be told when to call back to see if the Board approved a reward. On that next call they will be given the procedure for collecting their cash reward. Callers are sent through the drive-thru window of a local bank. There they give a password they received from Crime Stoppers. It will match the password given to the bank. The money is sent out to the caller and they remain anonymous.
Crime Stoppers of Lufkin, Inc. also sponsors the nation's only musical band dedicated to promoting the Crime Stoppers purpose as well as showing police officers as being friendly, helping the anti-drug campaign, promoting traffic safety, and many others.
The
CrimeStoppers Band is comprised of five Lufkin police officers
who accept donations to the Crime Stoppers program in place of a
performance fee.
